Where did Avignon get its name?

Avignon, France

Our community gets its name and provincial style from the city of Avignon in Southern France.  This ancient town is still home to about 16,000 people and is one of the few French cities that has preserved its ancient walls.  In the 1300s, it was home to seven successive popes.  Each pope resided in the Palais des Papes, or Palace of the Popes.  The Palais is still considered the center of the community in Avignon, both in France and Plano.
